Starting at the bottom of the drift
"The memory of Christmas '09 will be one that will last a lifetime. With a pending blizzard warning in the town where our familys live, my wife and I decided to drive out of town early to beat the storm. When we arrived in town the snow was just starting to come down pretty good. My father has a 20yr old paddle snowblower that can barely keep with a large snow. He and mom always say that the driveway is so big (120', 2-car, and street sidewalk) and that the plows block the driveway that they should think about moving.
My wife and I waited in line an hour and a half at a local dealer waiting for a shipment on 24" blowers hoping we could get one for mom and dad. On Christmas eve we were able to get the last one in town. On Christmas morning we woke up to 15" of snow and 3-4' drifts. Dad was grumbling that he didn't know what to do or how to even tackle the dirveway with the old blower. He and I got all bundled up to go out to the garage to start shoveling out the driveway. When he opened the garage door, he jumped back is shear amazement. The look on his face was like of a little kid in the candy store. I showed dad how to start the new snowblower with a simple push of a button and away he went. The blower never once hesitated or even sputtered under the thickest parts of the snow. In about 2hrs the whole driveway and street sidewalks were done, and that even included where the plows came by twice blocking the drive. Dad said that was the best present he ever had recieved. He called me the other night to say that the snowplowes were finally working on the sidesreets and had made a 7' pile on the corner. He sad it took a little bit but he made a path through it for neighbor kids to go to school next week. I am thankful that my parents now have a great machine to give them the freedom to stay in their house and not feel trapped by snow. I took pictures of my dad and I with the snowblower and had coffee cups made with the pictures on the side so we will always remember that day."

"After spending 13 years living in the south my wife, four kids and I moved to the Chicago area. Looking forward to our first snow, the children knew compared to the south they would be in for a treat. Moving from the south we were ill prepared for the first 6 inches. The kids had fun but we were faced with a 150 ft driveway to shovel. If only we had a snow blower, life would have been better. Now the snows are fun but by March we are ready for spring."

Slow and Furious: West Virginia Drift
Date: December 27, 2009
"We live in the mountains of West Virginia and when my daughter turned 14 she wanted to get a job. So on weekends I worked with her at our local ski resort in the child care center. Her older brother also taught Ski Wee (ski school for children), so we all had to be at work at the same time. After a snowy, windy night when we opened the garage door we thought we could drive through the snow that was drifted up against the garage door. The snow was heavier than we thought and the car got body hung in the drift. We dug out of that drift only to get to the end of the driveway and get hung up again. We could see the recently plowed street just a few feet away. We ended up being over two hours late for work. If only..."

Snow Dog
Date: December 27, 2009
"I am not a cold weather person but having a snow dog makes going outside in the snow fun. He likes to chase snow balls, roll in the snow, lay in the snow and would take a nap in the snow if I let him. At least someone in my house likes the white stuff."

The plow got stuck
Date: December 27, 2009
"Back in one of those bad snowstorms that used to strike when I was younger, back in the 70s, our small town's only snowplow broke down in the street in front of our house. We were surprised to see it there one snowy morning, not moving. There was a lot of snow, so much that our school was cancelled. The next morning, the plow was still there. School was cancelled again. We ended up with 4 snow days because of the snow plow being broken down. And I was the one who knew in advance."

Winter WhiteOut
Date: December 27, 2009
"I will never forget the time I was eight years old, that would be 1968. We got a massive snowstorm here in Minnesota. I remember everything being shut down for the day in the city and helping people dig their cars out of drifts, pushing them to give them a run at making it through the drifts. It was wonderful, no school, warm cocoa and a city shut down."

Can You Say Embarrassing?
Date: December 26, 2009
"I visited my now husband's family for the first time over a snowy Christmas holiday from college. Since I hadn't used my ski jacket in two years, I decided to wash it for the trip. Then off we went on our snowy way to his parents' house for the big introduction. As I took off my coat after being introduced to my future mother-in-law, I was horrified to see a pair of my underwear static clung to the front of my sweater!!! To save money at the laundromat I had washed all my clothes together, didn't use a fabric sheet in the dryer and didn't see my underwear clung to the inside of my ski jacket. Somewhere along the journey, my underwear decided to hitch a ride on my sweater. This is, without a doubt, my most favorite snow day memory!"

Skitching a ride
Date: December 26, 2009
"I remember growing up in the Chicago suburbs. When I was in grammar school, many parents would pick up their kids and take them home for lunch. Many of us would run after the cars and hold on to the bumpers and slide part way home. Some times we would also hang on to the door handles. On one occasion,I was holding a door handle and fell off but my glove stayed in the handle.I imagine the parents were surprised to see that glove attached to the door. Anyway,I don't think any of us realized how dangerous this was. I do now and pray no one ever grabs onto my car."

Deep Drifts
Date: December 26, 2009
"When I was a kid in Michigan, we had a snow day. The snow drifts were so high that my sister and I took turns jumping off our carport roof. It wasn't dangerous because it was only about a two foot drop into the snow drifts. We had a blast!"

college snowstorm
Date: December 26, 2009
"It was 1967 and I was in college just south of Chicago. My cousin's wedding was scheduled for the upcoming weekend three hours away and we were getting 20 inches of snow with drifting. When the weather cleared no one was going anywhere. My roommate and I dug out my buried car and decided the best place to go was across the open field next to the parking lot. Our plan was to move the car about ten feet at a time before it would get stuck. Using the bumper jack, we would jack the rear of the car as high as it would go and then with one pushing and the other driving we pushed the car off the jack. It took about 2 hours but we got it out. Just as the time to leave for the wedding approached the only road out of town closed. We made the wedding via train which became another story. My roommate spent the weekend moving the car out of the way of snow removal."

A Special Valentine's Gift
Date: December 26, 2009
"My husband and I grew up in areas of the northeast that always get a lot of snow... sometimes 200 inches by January!... but as a newlywed couple, we found ourselves stationed at an Army post in TX. And honestly, we missed the romantic beauty of huge snowdrifts, snowball fights, and just the way it brightens up a grey winter's day. Our 1st Valentine's Day together was also the day before our 1st anniversary. Just being together that weekend, with our newborn son, was gift enough... and we vowed to make it a memorable one before impending deployment would separate us. The grey, wet TX days did little to brighten our spirits, however. Imagine our surprise and joy when we opened the curtains on St. Valentine's Day to see huge snowflakes falling everywhere! The inch or two that fell was just a little snowfall for us, but it meant more to us than many a great snowstorm would have meant before... a little taste of home... of romance... of wintery joy in the midst of a bleak Texas February... of God's promise to brighten the sadness in our hearts and give us one last, wonderful memory together. It was the most beautiful St. Valentine's Day ever. :)"

Great Uncles snow plowing
Date: December 25, 2009
"I am 41, became disabled at 34, I snowplow for my great uncle Jim, everytime it snows. Jim is going to be 92 in January, he is my God father. and one of 2 remaining brothers my grandfather has left. When I became unable to work following a brain injury, I thought of ways I can best use my new found time, and aside from volunteering at church and our sons school, I decided to do as much as I can to help uncle Jim. These excursions are often followed by a visit, where we talk about everything under the sun. Uncle Jim will talk about his WWII experiences. I realize now that our nation is losing our own history books, in that so many of the remaining WWII vets are dying. And once they are gone, there goes the most reliable source of history we know. When we get a large snowfall, and my son is off of school, I will take him to see uncle Jim. He loves uncle Jim and the stories he tells. Snow days have a whole new meaning to me now. Its twice the work for me, but the reward is gettng to know more about my uncle Jim, and more about history."

The Snowstorm
Date: December 23, 2009
"The snowstorm we have just had is my most memorable as I'm living it right now. I have had no electric for the past 4 days. My refrigerator is a cooler on the front porch. My cook stove is on top of the kersosene heater. We have candles and kersosene lamps for lights. All I want for Christmas is for the electric to be working again."

Hard realization
Date: December 23, 2009
"My husband and I were in our 60's and very healthy. We had a huge snowstorm and as was our usual practice we were shoveling our drive. Our neighbor came running over and was showing great concern that we were shoveling. It was at that moment that I realized in her eyes (certainly not ours) we were old and in danger while shoveling."

Blizzard
Date: December 23, 2009
"When I was about 8 we had a huge blizzard in Massachusetts. We lived right across froma middle school and the plows had dumped tons of snow there. The kids in the neighborhood all got together and made an honest to goodness castle out of the snow. We had tunnels, stairs, rooms, etc. We had the most extensive snow fights ever and had our own little kingdom to play in for weeks and weeks."

My sister's 1st Sled Ride.
Date: December 22, 2009
"Lets call it the winter of 1982. My 6 year old sister got a plastic "Incredible Hulk" sled for Christmas. It was lime green and resemble the bottom potion of the luggage carriers that you see on many vans today.
I am her big brother and I wanted to give her a maiden ride to remember. We setoff for a ride around the house. I was the human mule and pulled the sled with the tow rope provided by the manufacturer. Little sis yelled with joy as we raced around the yard of a suburban home.
Well....all was well until the sled rode over a small hump in the yard. Crack! The "Hulk" split in two pieces as the cheap plastic could not bend over the minor imperfection. Little sis cried and cried as her dream sled was no more. I am sure that I must have bribed her with a promise of a new and better sled at my expense. I thought that the years would have surely erased her memory of this tragedy. No such luck, she lovingly reminded me just a week ago about the maiden voyage of her "Incredible Hulk" sled."
